Serious Question about KBOO's website and managment

KBOO's primary URL is http://www.kboo.fm/

A secondary URL, http://www.kboo.org is also active.  This is not unusual.  Owners/webmasters want to snatch up names from potential domain squatters, etc.  Going to the website it's obviously the same one redirected and run by the same people.

But what the fuck is going on with http://gaia.noco.net/ which appears to be a KBOO mirror too?

This was pointed out at Indymedia.  No one has offered an explanation to date:

http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2013/06/423630.shtml?discuss#416828

Question for KBOO peeps 05.Jun.2013 06:09

just want to know

Why is KBOO mirrored at this URL?

 http://gaia.noco.net/

It's an exact mirror of KBOO.

http://noco.net/ is apparently something called North County:

"Welcome to NorthCountry

If you're looking at this page, you may have made a mistake typing something into your address line, or perhaps you decided to check out the site because it was someone's email host, or you just liked the name. Sorry to disappoint you, but there's nothing really here right now.

If you're trying to contact Roger Leigh, please send an email to info(at)northcountry.com."

Does this person have a formal connection to KBOO? I don't think users or members agreeing to use KBOO's website are agreeing to have their activity managed by some guy they don't know about. Especially some guy they don't know about with a proxy in FRANCE? WTF?

But that doesn't explain why he has the entire KBOO website mirrored apparently without KBOO's knowledge.

There could be good reasons for this, but it looks strange as hell and like a possible security weakness.

And there's a connection to KBOO and the Clinton St Theater?:  http://kboo.fm/node/52587

program date:
Thu, 12/27/2012

Then, we're joined by Lani Jo and Roger Leigh, the new proprietors of the storied Clinton Street Theater, which will be celebrating its centennial year with a series of special screenings and events.

Title: Low-Budget Filmmaking and the Clinton Street Centennial
Date: December 27
Genre: Public Affairs
Year: 2012
Producer: S.W. Conser
Length: 33:40 minutes (13.49 MB)
Format: MP3 Mono 22kHz 56Kbps (CBR)

It looks like KBOO's problems are more than skin deep.

In the wake of Comrade Loving's hacker shenanigans, perhaps closer scrutiny should be made of KBOO's website and who controls it.  One could interpret this information as a  fishing scheme to collect member traffic and login's.  At the least, members did not agree to be members to have their information sniffed by a third party(noco.net) they aren't aware of.

Anyone with more info post in comments or email.  Thanks!

Hat tip to Comrade Email leak.

  1. Roger Leigh built the website kboo.fm and I believe up until recently, or perhaps still, is the contracted web designer and web hoster. That's all I know.

  2. Maybe it was where he hosted it while building the KBOO website? Some people do that on a sub domain, then transfer later. I don't know the legalities of leaving the mirror active. It's odd but possibly harmless. If you think a forgetful web-designer is harmless.

  3. I was told one of the reasons the site is crashed (navigation links are garbage and many files corrupted) is that it was built from multiple sections that were smashed together the last time it was "updated" or something like that. I've also been told that a complete redo of the site is on Fitch's and the board's agenda. If you look at file naming structure from two years ago and files saved today, there is no consistent directory structure or naming conventions. What had held together for a while was a Drupal site where all content was a node, and somehow the navigation linked it all. This is gone and new files no longer are node numbers (at least what we can see). I'm not a Drupal expert, but suspect that having hundreds of people with direct posting access might have something to do with the site crashing.

The last update seemed to change little in functionality, but added a whole lot of graphics and silly animation. A site built by a committee I'm afraid. There were notes about hosting changes in some of the board meeting minutes going back about a year or so.

Cue for another Fitch Lynch Mob: "Fitch is destroying the work of the community! Etc, etc, etc"

If you mean the MAX running past and traffic, etc. I think it's kinda cool. It would be cooler if the website worked and wasn't a nightmare to navigate.

The animations are one of the weird things that stand out: someone went out of their way to design and install flash animations graphics, but can't troubleshoot the site?

They're confused about priorities. Get the site to work before adding site bling.

  5. What a grant from the Allen Foundation can do:
    http://kexp.org/

The Allen Foundation is a generous supporter of the arts in Seattle and Portland. I wrote a letter to them when they just started out to request a grant application on behalf of A Contemporary Theatre. Instead of an application, I got a check for $10,000. Was I happy? Kinda sorta. We wanted to ask for $40 thou. I went back and got the rest we wanted.

KBOO gets no funds from the Allen Foundation. Why? We've never asked.

KBOO supporters think we are just one more failed fund drive from a balanced budget, after years of deficit spending -- largely to run a jobs program for some inefficient and ineffective staff. A drop of listeners of almost half in less that 10 years? Any other place, the staff would have been sacked. If a magical Winter Drive could have rescued KBOO from our budget crisis, why hasn't that happened in any of the past 6+ years of running a deficit?

One of the staff did write a grant for Board training, as called for by the expensive 3 years in the making Strategic Plan. A Foundation invested in KBOO by giving us $35,000. Now the Board is on the brink of tossing out all of that work by our consultants. Anyone who knows anything about fund-raising knows this will be the end of grants for KBOO and the inability to realize the grand plans to develop a Media Center, or many of our other elements of our Strategic Plan.

These folks will wake up when the money runs out -- and by then it will be too late.

      THIS

Watching this train wreck it's hard to not wonder if for bizarre reasons only known to the Inner Party(we must destroy the corporate media machine!) that this wasn't the plan all along. Because it's hard to fathom people this dumb all acting in concert.

If KBOO runs out of money, what are the options? Is the corporation dissolved and the assets sold off? Or is it possible for a single party or organization to swoop in and buy the whole shebang? And keep the FCC license and anything else required to keep operating as a radio station? Or, even if they owned the assets, would they have to go through the whole process of licensing as a new entity?

    3. "Because it's hard to fathom people this dumb all acting in concert."

Wishful thinking is powerful, Comrade! Besides, all KBOO needs to do is borrow more money from some capitalist bank, if more money is needed! No problemo!

"And keep the FCC license and anything else required to keep operating as a radio station?"

My bet is that two years from now, 90.7 will be a Christian broadcasting station - they are very good at swooping in and grabbing licenses, when the licenses become available, even temporarily.

I'm sure that all current KBOO paid staff will be hired by the Christian broadcasting station, of course! It will be a requirement in the new union contract!

  7. Are you guys serious with this post?

I am the shadowy figure known publicly as 'Roger Leigh'. Well, actually, that's not a pseudonym, it's my real name. And a google search in Portland will usually pull up some real links to me on the first page, so I don't think I'm that hard to find. You did turn up valid contact info for me, but failed to use it.

I don't really know all of the nonsense going on at KBOO these days; though I've been the primary admin for the station for the last 7 years running the website and most of KBOO's Internet presence, I've always stayed clear of inner station politics as much as possible.

I have no dog in this fight, except for the fact that I'd like to see KBOO survive as a viable source of independent media in Portland. But this site, which claims that "Recent events at the station have been blown out of proportion" and that "We are documenting the ongoing tussle and any new fibs and misinformation the "Keep KBOO KBOO" crowd creates," is clearly trying to make something out of nothing here.

This post shows incredible ignorance of technology, a lack of critical thinking, and utter laziness in pursuit of the truth.

    For the record:

I had the site on a private server at Alchemy until recently, and the gaia.noco.net address was merely an unpublished alternate handle to the same machine (not a mirror) used largely for testing.

Northcountry.com has been a business name I've used since the mid 80's.

There is no proxy in France (that's completely moronic) - that's simply the domain name registry I use - they're well established, reputable, economical, conform to higher EU privacy standards, don't have an overtly corporate agenda, and don't use misogynistic advertising.

In the time that I've run the website, we've NEVER had a security breach of ANY kind - a record I'm proud of, considering how many folks are out to sabotage the station.

I am also the owner of the Clinton Street Theater, along with my wife (you could have also contacted me there).

I have involvements with several other nonprofit organizations around town.

NO ONE HAS EVER TRIED TO CONTACT ME ABOUT ANY OF THIS NONSENSE, even though you found a valid contact email for me, nor did they ask anyone at the station, where most folks know me & my involvement.

So who, exactly, is trying to manufacture an issue out of nothing but hyperbolic and inaccurate claims?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Thank you for weighing in Roger! Regarding your quotes:

"You did turn up valid contact info for me, but failed to use it."
"(you could have also contacted me there)."
"NO ONE HAS EVER TRIED TO CONTACT ME ABOUT ANY OF THIS NONSENSE,"

We're just trying to blend in with the rest of Loyal Cadre! Who you are implying did not tell you about these questions, even though the same subject was published at Indymedia in one of Glorious Leader's threads. That they have Indy bees checking like crazy for them.

"This post shows incredible ignorance of technology, a lack of critical thinking, and utter laziness in pursuit of the truth."

Again, just trying to blend in! You should compare Rebecca Nay's visit logs to what she says! Talk about techy ignorance!

We suspect this is a bit of a fib:

"I don't really know all of the nonsense going on at KBOO these days;"

Not just by being an associate of the KBOO board president, (who also is pretending not to know what's going on even though he goes to Glorious Leader's parties), but because you sir, have visited this blog before.

    "Returning Visits: 1"

What was that about showing an incredible ignorance of technology?

    1. And that returning visit isn't just reloading the page:

"Multiple visits spread over more than one day"

    2. Actually those can be two different pieces of info. That returning visit could be the second today AND he's been a multiple visitor over days. Making the question why didn't he say something, oh, back in June.

This could go either way. He could be inner party. Or he could be a cultivated pasty of the inner party. Notice he searched for his name?
      savekboofromsavekboo.blogspot.com/search?q=roger

Someone told him to do that.

Hey Roger Rabbit, since you've been around these people for so long, you must have noticed they're expert manipulators.

"In the time that I've run the website, we've NEVER had a security breach of ANY kind - a record I'm proud of, considering how many folks are out to sabotage the station."

Leading me to ask which people you think are sabotaging the station? Didn't you just say you had no dog in this fight?

BTW, your site's search sucks balls. Ironic seeing you're familiar with a site search.
