A Message For Our Readers

It's been a long road in the short time since the start of June.

We set up this blog in response to the antics of Theresa Mitchell's "Save Kboo" campaign she was spamming across the Portland Indymedia newswire.  The series of articles were repetitious, hard to parse, and with little documentation to support assertions the KBOO community radio corporation was being "taken over" by "top down corporatism".  It was obvious one person was being demonized by staff, Lynn Fitch, the very person staff had lauded only last year.  As the rhetoric became shrill, several "tells" led us to suspect KBOO was being controlled by a small cult-like group(dubbed the "Inner Party") who convinced themselves the end justifies any means to stay in power and silence any questions or criticisms of their activities.  We are not pleased to have been proven correct.

These means have included:

-Having members who help run the Portland Indymedia collective censor and suppress any comments or articles critical of the "Inner Party", including what anywhere else would be considered news for members, like ignoring the bank for 2 months.

-Having the same members abuse their access at Indymedia to share IP addresses of comments and articles critical of  the "Inner Party".

-Impersonating Ed Kraus to smear him as a pro Israeli anti-Palestinian Zionist.

-Posting links to mugshots of dissenting members as an intimidation tactic.

-A board member soliciting for help to hack this blog
-The same board member outing a whistleblower at Facebook
-The same board member accusing two KBOO members of running this blog and threatening them with lawsuits.
-In a time of fiscal crisis, blowing the chance for new revenue and new membership by alienating Blue Oregon petitioners request that KBOO air Thom Hartmann.

-Theresa Mitchell lying to members about the reality of impending bankruptcy.  Failing that, changing her story to blame Fitch for the financial problems Mitchell claimed at first didn't exist.

-In retaliation, removing board member Hadrian Micciche for talking to the press about KBOO's problems.

-At a meeting meant to intimidate the board into action,  Joe Uris blaming Fitch for a T-shirt that staff including Ani, made and approved.  Theresa Mitchell sits right next to him while he tells these lies and does not correct him.

-Tommy "Hollywood" Hood sends out phishing email after a long time KBOO member has told people, including the blog authors, to expect him to upload his audio to KBOO's website.  This has yet to happen.

-When confronted Tommy claims he was hacked, but refuses to respond to more inquiries or cooperate with the investigation after the phishing email is reported to multiple agencies including the FCC

It is known that KBOO Board President Conser was informed formally through the website about this phishing attempt.  No one from KBOO has responded to this situation.  Observers are forced to conclude KBOO as an institution not only condones the phishing action, but is hoping if they ignore it the matter will go away.

It is now our belief that KBOO as a community radio institution is finished.

It is disastrous that a small micro-cult clique controls a non profit corporation that exists for the public.

It is fraudulent to take money from the public under the expectation of serving the public to run a private radio club.

In light of these new events, we consider our original goal of education via satire and humor for the upcoming elections to be moot. As observed by others, the outcome of this KBOO election will not change anything.

It won't change financial insolvency.
It won't take the board out of the hands of the "Inner Party".

At the end of the day KBOO will remain in the hands of a micro cult exploiting the public's trust in community radio to fund their private radio club.

This is unacceptable.

Therefore we are announcing our plans to abandon any attempt to "save" KBOO from the "Inner Party" and it's organs.

Instead we are moving to "save" community radio, or at least the community, from the toxic malignant influence KBOO has become.  Expect more information around the time of the next KBOO board meeting, Monday, August 26th.

Stay tuned....

Postscript: To the tools trying to manipulate their way into our confidence:  stop.  We have records of the lies and will publish them if provoked.  The best thing is to disappear.  Fishing (or phishing for that matter)will lead to more fail.

    2. Something's afoot with Tom Hartmann, there are rumors the PC might do exactly what was suspected, wait till the election is over then "try Hartmann" for a short time then take back off the air. Rumor is only 4 months. That's not enough time to develop an audience and make a difference with membership and dollars, but long enough for the inside crowd to be able to claim they "gave it a chance, but it's not KBOO enough".

IMHO someone needs to tell Thom it'd be a wise move to revoke his offer. Since he was going to do it for free anyway, he's not out any money, but can stay out of an ugly situation.

  2. As I've been saying for a while, and many former managers and board members have been saying for a longer while, it all comes down to governance.

KBOO cannot continue to be governed by an elected only board full of programmers, who fear that if they don't follow the dictates of the anointed staff and insiders, their shows will disappear. We've allowed our individual radio egos to make us complicit with a toxic and dysfunctional non profit.

KBOO's governance also allows for total control by manipulation of elections and harassment of people in dissent. Nothing will change until the current board is replaced in total and the bylaws are changed to prevent this from being a popularity contest ruled from behind the scenes.

Unfortunately, this reality forces anyone who currently is a programmer to have to decide a) continue the charade and pretend it's all love and puppies at KBOO or b) tell the truth about what you've seen and put up with, in the hopes that KBOO could transform into something healthier. Healthier in human relations, healthier financially, and presenting a broader and more inclusive programming to become relevant for more than the miniscule micro audience it serves today.

This dysfunction is not new at KBOO, it's only new that it's becoming more public what's going on, and that more people are willing to talk about what they've put up with and tolerated.

Time to get real and demand real change.

The irony is if nothing changes, and programmers are completely dependent on KBOO, their shows will disappear anyway. Time for programmers to develop a presence on other outlets and download their archives if they haven't already.

"We've allowed our individual radio egos to make us complicit with a toxic and dysfunctional non profit."

I'm not sure that's accurate. Not even sure "programmers" per se are the problem. Some programmers, sure. But how many programmers actually know how bad it is and have all the facts? The Inner party works over time to hide this. And smear anyone who brings it up.

That makes complicit staff and board members far more responsible than any programmer who's probably getting 10 different stories from as many people.

    MICHAEL WELLS BOARD CANDIDATE STATEMENT

I am running for the Board and ask for your support because I believe that KBOO is a tremendous community resource that is being underutilized. My board goals are to build listenership, build membership, stabilize station finances and work with members, volunteers, staff and board to promote organizational stability and effectiveness.

In addition to these practical matters, we need to figure out KBOO’s role in an era with four major noncommercial radio stations, iPods & podcasts, Internet streaming, social media and satellite radio. KBOO operates in an entirely different media environment than 10 or 20 years ago.

We also need to figure out KBOO’s role in building and supporting community in a rapidly changing society – as a resource, an advocate and a model organization.

I have a long history in Portland and with KBOO. I was a volunteer from 1968 to 1991, including hosting Wednesday morning Dawn Concert from about 1975 to 1991. I was Station Manager from 1978-1981, another time when KBOO was in turmoil. I have an FCC General license and can talk to engineers.

I have decades of nonprofit experience as a volunteer, board member, staff and consultant. For the past 25 years I have been a grantwriting consultant to nonprofits and teach grantwriting at Portland State. I am comfortable with accounting and budgeting and wrote a book on nonprofit finances.

BOARD CANDIDATE STATEMENT OF JOE URIS

I am running for the KBOO Board because I believe that:

KBOO is a vital voice for progressive thought and action.

KBOO has a unique blend of news, public affairs programming and varied music that speak to many diverse and underserved communities. This programming must be supported and strengthened.

Changing listener habits, new technologies and options together with a failure to adequately maintain the membership base and seek out new listeners have put the station in great danger.

If elected to the board my first priorities would be to increase support through: better region wide publicity, stronger efforts to regain and add members, stronger graphic presentation of programming, a strong presence on social media, making KBOO more accessible and financially secure.

These efforts at transparency and public outreach in addition to adding more listeners and members will also make the station a more democratic organization.

I have, for many years taught Sociology and American History as well as taking supportive and collaborative leadership roles in education, at the community college, college and university levels.

I have had successful involvement in commercial talk radio, KBOO talk radio, theater, and independent publications.

I have been a frequent contributor in the past to such publications as the Oregonian and Willamette Week.

My community involvement includes early peace movement and social justice organizing, pure water and environmental concerns.

I am comfortable with struggle, disagreement, differing perspectives and efforts to build and maintain consensus.

And he has "decades of nonprofit experience as a volunteer, board member, staff and consultant." Well, where the fuck has he been?
One thing these statements show: KBOO members have involved themselves in the progressive community to build credibility for years. Maybe it didn't start out that way. But once they became tools for the "Inner Party" that's all it means now.

Michael Wells: Hi. My name is Michael Wells. I've been a KBOO member since 1968 when the station started. I was a volunteer from the early 70s until the early 90s. I was station manager from 78 until I think 92 [ed. should be 82]. I've been on the board a couple of times. I haven't been very involved. I have a couple of observations. One is when I was station manager, we reorganized the staff because the way the staff had been set up related to our funding that didn't work and it was going to collapse. So we had to reorganize the staff. While I was station manager that I can think of we had to fire two people, one of them my best friend on the staff at the time who is here now, for various reasons. And so that happened at that time, the station manager was allowed to fire people. I have no idea what the personnel policy is now. So that's sort of background. My observation about KBOO for the last few years, about 10 years ago, I volunteered to write a grant for KBOO. There was a rotating cast of people. Different people would show up at every meeting. We could not get anything done. We finally abandoned it. About three or four years ago I got involved in another project which dragged on and on and on for whatever reasons. The first time I met Lynn we talked about the project and we got it done in about three months. I think that Lynn whenever her faults, whatever the board's doing, is moving us forward. KBOO has been from my point of view very stuck. I'm glad to see us moving.

    3. "just because the inner party endorsed someone doesn't automatically mean they're an inner party tool."

Actually, yes it does. Tool or zombie. Jenny Davis hasn't been around and hasn't a clue. She's obviously a zombie in training. This Wells guy doesn't have that excuse. KKK thinks he's not a threat to them.

His patter sounds reasonable. Doesn't mean jack. Haven't we learned from Phishy Tommy? Watch what people do(or don't do) and who they support. That's a better indicator than words alone.

"do your own research, never know what you'll find."

Yeah, read that already actually. Problem is you can't say "Oh I've been around all this time and have this experience" and also sit on the sidelines saying nothing while the Inner Party acts like complete dicks.

This is weak sauce: "I think that Lynn whenever her faults, whatever the board's doing, is moving us forward"

That's sweet. What has he actually said or done to demand accountability from the board for leaking to Ani and Theresa all this shit that was thrown at Fitch to drive her off?

He can't have it both ways.

      Delete
    4. Devil's advocate: KKK could be playing on his sense of fairness, and endorsing him BECAUSE they know it puts him under suspicion by tainting with association. This theory means they're assuming ppl like us represent a large enough block to throw the election. Which may be true, idk.

I agree after all this shit Wells is going to have to do and say more than that to convince me he's not playing both sides concern trolling.

The smart thing for candidates to do is post their own statements on their KBOO blog, and website or other media FIRST, before engaging toxic micro interest groups. I can't find his statement anywhere else but here and KKK.

At the least that shows he's a fool. I'm not voting for a fool.

Why don't they post on KBOO's facebook timeline? Is the mod equally suspicious of their motives? Or do they know the real membership's response will be "WTF"?

Submitted by Michael Wells (not verified) on Mon, 03/01/2010 - 7:42pm.

      Hey Arthur,

If you're still reading this 2 weeks later, congratulations. Your tenure as Station Manager may have been KBOO's longest. I think I've known them all, as well as being one, and it's a crazy, wonderful job but it eventually drives everyone out. You seemed to have brought some of that Buddhist calm to the station for a period and that in itself is an accomplishment. Good luck to the staff on their new collective management experiment (I think it was last tried in about 1975 with Sara Cook). And happy trails to you, hope you get some time to relax before your next adventure.

That sounds all warm and fuzzy. Then Ed Kraus pipes up:

It has pained me deeply to see how badly Arthur and others have been treated recently by some in the KBOO community. I can only hope that our board and staff will be able to lead KBOO out of the current moment, to a place where KBOO becomes an environment where kindness and respect are the norm.

Compare these statements(Kraus's has been truncated, see full at link). If Ed hadn't said anything, we'd think this job "just drives everyone out", not that there's a pattern of abuse at KBOO.

Wells has been at KBOO since the Crucifixion, but doesn't notice "how badly Arthur and others have been treated recently by some in the KBOO community"? And can't make the connection that is probably the reason why many people leave? Notice Davis isn't just leaving the job, he's saying sayonara to all things KBOO(or that's how I read it).

And that's why Wells looks like a guardian of the status quo. In other words no threat to KKK.

    AND FROM JENNIFER DAVIS:

    Dear KBOO friends,

I am extremely honored and grateful for the confidence you have placed in me to represent you as a candidate for the board. Like you, I love and revere the free media, uncensored information, community connections and musical and cultural diversity which KBOO brings to our lives.

I want to help KBOO thrive and flourish. I have intermittently volunteered directly with KBOO over a thirty year period. I am an avid KBOO listener. I now have some time in my life, taking a break from other community activism, to run for the KBOO board, which some KBOO friends had suggested I do. I would love to be helpful to KBOO in any capacity, and I really don't feel the board would be the only way to be helpful. So I am very neutral about where you place my name in your list. Please feel free to put it anywhere you like on the list!

Next week I will be contacting the volunteer coordinator to see about how I can help out at KBOO as needed now. Also, I will be sending out to KBOO board folks and some KBOO friends a bunch of my ideas for ways to organize the committees, marketing, etc. based on experience gleaned from thirty years of: community activism, gardening, serving on two boards, helping to create an elementary school, working as a film production manager, an artistic director and as an artist, also working lots of other jobs (primarily as a janitor, dishwasher, cook, waitress, nanny and teen counsellor) and raising two kids. This way folks can get a deeper insight into me as a person, and who knows? Maybe some of the ideas would be helpful to KBOO. I will CC you folks on these ideas-if you think this would be appropriate and useful.

    Viva KBOO!

    Cheers,
    Jennifer Davis

I'm glad you brought something like this up. It illustrates a need to have some solid documentation done on KBOO weirdness. I very much appreciate the work done by the authors of this blog and the documentation of the current crazy going on.

    5. If I'm remembering this correctly, Yaney is very close to Michael Papadopolus, a partner or close friend. Glen Owen was banned from the station and thrown off the board due to strange and alleged abusive behavior. MP and GO jointly sued KBOO and all the directors at that time as individuals, which led to at least $50K in legal fees, and higher rates for the possibly soon to be cancelled D and O insurance.

Michael P has been an interesting board member after being seated later when both a judge asked for it and the 20% aliens rule was no longer an issue when another (yes another) alien board member resigned in disgust.

Marie Cullen. Isn't she the Marie who was outed as faking being Irish doing an Irish show with Per Fareng?

And the always fascinating John Mackey was I think involved also in the KBOO.INFO group, at least for a while. He sure has been quiet lately, except to show up on Facebook to call Grace Marion and Theresa liars. Go figure, what's next?

God, it's so inbred and out of control.

"MP and GO jointly sued KBOO and all the directors at that time as individuals, which led to at least $50K in legal fees,"

Gotta check who was on the board then. If anyone is really a friend or a friend of a friend of Owen's, it would show a reckless and mercenary exploitation of KBOO's legal fees.

"Marie Cullen. Isn't she the Marie who was outed as faking being Irish doing an Irish show with Per Fareng?"

      Yes.

"And the always fascinating John Mackey was I think involved also in the KBOO.INFO group, at least for a while. He sure has been quiet lately, except to show up on Facebook to call Grace Marion and Theresa liars."

I was surprised he was part of KBOO.info too. Want to think he was bamboozled because he was bitter about his treatment at KBOO, and couldn't tell friend from foe.

Owen is sorta saying the right things, very familiar to us following this blog:

      http://kboodotinfo.blogspot.com/2010/08/glen-owen-candidate-statements-to.html

"why i want to be on the kboo board : to counter escalating assault on civil liberties as favored by kboo's existing self-appointed, self perpetuating, oligarchy of fake "progressiveness" etc"

Reading between the lines, sounds like Owen was social engineering, seeing who was ready and willing to oppose KBOO leadership.

Note he blogs about Yvette M., http://kboodotinfo.blogspot.com/2010/08/yvette-maranowski-candidate-statement.html She's since been taken back into the fold:
      http://savekboofromsavekboo.blogspot.com/2013/08/kkk-comrade-partridge-releases-inner.html

"Yvette Maranowski KBOO people have got to get over the fear based thinking in order to be progressive and move forward. I recommend prioritizing diverse workshops and retreats to heal wounds, and I recommend a new set of standards for behavior and decision making. These are ways to work together forward."

      Yaney's words on Owen:

"Glen Owen is not a Nazi, he is however a gay man who's alien partner was denied residency. That was a defining moment in Glen's life. One that remains with him to this day. And he is my friend whom I cherish. "

Yaney has more to say on Cullen:

"Marie Cullen was unseated by other members of the board because she didn't fill out the proper paperwork to show her sweat equity membership. I'd say that's a bit like a timecard. I am sure that there were others who could vouch for her attendance and volunteering--she could have been given a deferral or a waiver as sometimes happens in other membership organizations. It would have been a courtesy. However, I paid for her membership that year. And was lectured about the bylaws by the membership coordinator. "

This is why anyone knowing all these people for years, standing by doing and saying little and suddenly claiming to come in to save the day is probably pulling a fraud.

As soon as they're trusted/elected/whatever, the slow backslide will begin.

Maybe SKFSK needs to contact these KKK endorsed candidates with their own questions and see what they say....

Kinda familiar with Maire's episode, there's more to it, too and it would actually make sense. i respect her intellect & more, concerned with what I saw here about being involved with 9/11 truthers, nutters, etc, but not surprised. So, back to kboo - juvenile cliques of role-playing adults fail to keep a non-profit going...the quest for justice & philanthropy is so great that all the money is gone. Time to dump paid staff, improve the website, the union idea is a start, remember the shop steward will essentially be management & take the free offer from thomm hartmann, I guess, though I don't really like it that much, might help if I ever listened to him. KBOO ballots are out!
Posted on August 19, 2013 by savekboo Standard

    ballotKBOO BALLOTS ARE OUT–VOTE NOW!

The Keep KBOO as KBOO Committee/Friends of KBOO recommend the following five candidates:

Michael Wells, Adin Rogovin, Jennifer Davis, Robin Ryan and Joe Uris.

Note that there are four slots available in the Election; I recommend choosing among the five listed above.

This is a crucial election. We need to get our excellent and dedicated people on the Board, to avoid any further dalliance with the corporate capitulationism that has so far cost the KBOO radio community the proceeds of a Winter Membership Drive, and a great deal of stress and division. The slate listed above will promote the visibility of the Station, adding listeners, members, and financial strength. They are dedicated to a truly accessible and transparent process. Please choose your candidates and get your ballot in by mail, at the station, or in person at the Annual Meeting:

ANNUAL MEETING SUNDAY SEPT. 15, 2013, 1 TO 4 PM

MATT DISHMAN COMMUNITY CENTER 77 NE KNOTT ST PORTLAND, OR

Ballots taken to the Meeting are due by 2:40 PM deadline!

Ben Hoyne, a KBOO Board candidate that I do NOT recommend, has posted these words on Blue Oregon, the Democratic Party-aligned website:
“My goal is to get 1,000 people to pay $20 to become KBOO members and VOTE in the September board election. The ballot will be mailed to you; all you have to do is mail it back.
“We need to get 1,000 people willing to place a $20 bet on progressive media, on community radio, on KBOO. Ballots will be mailed in late July, so you need to become a member soon.”

    http://www.blueoregon.com/2013/06/election-no-one-talking-about/

Ben and his ilk would bring back the corporate Board Policy Manual and the top-down management that the Keepers have worked to abolish at KBOO. That’s why we need to step up with our ballots and participation, and move towards our goal of a fully Internet-savvy people’s media hub.

I love the hypocrisy that is teeming in this post.
Here we have your group endorsing/recommending 5 people for the board of directors of the KBOO Foundation.

However, later in your post, you vilify Ben Hoyne, who states he would like 1000 people to donate $20,and vote in the upcoming election. I read the article in that link and in none of the text does he recommend, advise, or tell someone how they should vote.

In addition, Mark Sherman, is a current board member, and a member of the nominating committee. Because of his affiliation with Keep KBOO as KBOO. A group that is endorsing candidates. The integrity of this election is suspect to begin with.

cranking up the hysteria 23.Aug.2013 19:39
    Theresa Mitchell link

Just got this email from the last KBOO Staff member aligned with the Lynn Fitch takeover group, claiming falsely that "all personal contact information" is "compromised." This is an effort to make the legitimate volunteer-to-volunteer phone bank look illicit or illegal:

This internal KBOO email is not for wider distribution.
I am very sorry that I must send you this email.

It is likely that all of your personal contact information stored at KBOO was recently compromised and is currently in the possession of one or more individuals not authorized to possess it. The breach appears to have not been achieved electronically, but I am nonetheless very sorry that it has occurred.

This past week, I have received several messages from KBOO volunteers regarding phone calls they recently received from individuals representing a group referring to itself as 'Keep KBOO KBOO.' This group is offering voting suggestions regarding the upcoming KBOO board election, having multiple people use the KBOO volunteer list to operate a phone bank.

In the course of my job, I must occasionally print and distribute a KBOO membership list for KBOO members. This is always carried out in strict accordance with both Oregon state law and the KBOO Bylaws. The information I include in those printed reports is limited to full donor name/s and a complete mailing address. I never include phone numbers or email addresses. At no time do I produce volunteer lists, unless requested by the Volunteer Coordinator.

Much more is known about the details of these calls and callers, as well as others involved in procuring and distributing the volunteer list, than I am at liberty to relay here. But you should know that KBOO staff are pursuing the issue until all details are known and a proper resolution is achieved for those affected and for the operation of KBOO Radio.

If you receive a phone call from anyone regarding the upcoming election, especially if they are not a known person to you, then please note all details you can about the call (date, time, phone # of caller, male/female voice, name of caller, any affiliation offered and what they say) and email it all to me.

I will keep your identity anonymous throughout this process if you request so.

Once again, I am very sorry that this has occurred.

I have concerns in regard to:

The majority of the board placing in abeyance the Board Policy Manual.

Allowing two sets of employee policies to be in effect simultaneously.

Voting to approve expenditures without adequate information possibly in violation of fiduciary responsibility.

Voting to NOT follow the duty of loyalty to the foundation, policy.

Directors debating whether members and volunteers are entitled to privacy.

Directors putting personal matters above and to the expense of the foundation.

Failure to protect the privacy of KBOO members and volunteers.

Failure to honor privacy during discussions of personnel matters in public meetings.

Inappropriate communication between Board Members and employees.

Failure to maintain integrity in the KBOO election process.

Employing multiple conflicting standards of conduct toward employees and Directors.

Disregard for conflicts of interest on the part of Directors.

Lack of interest and commitment to board led fund raising and investing the time to do so.

For these reasons I am resigning effective immediately.

It is my intention is to continue to participate on committees and as a volunteer and programmer to help KBOO sustain and prosper, however, I cannot in good faith remain a sitting director on a board I fear is causing the Foundation to be in danger of fiscal insolvency and placing it in danger of litigation.

  32. Welcome to the Death Spiral, Comrades!

"the teetering finances of the station and its owner, the nonprofit Pacifica Foundation, became apparent on a Friday afternoon this month with a tearful on-air announcement by Summer Reese, Pacifica’s interim executive director, that the station was laying off 19 of its 29 employees just to cover basic expenses like the rent for its transmitter atop the Empire State Building."

    ...

"Those same problems were on display at a public WBAI board meeting last week in an arts space in Lower Manhattan. Despite the layoffs just days before, the first 25 minutes were devoted to a procedural debate about the night’s agenda, with frequent mentions of Robert’s Rules of Order. Occasional shouts of “fascist!” and “go back to the N.S.A.!” rang out from listeners in attendance.

Former WBAI staff members complain that constant management turnover as the board instituted one “coup” after another made their jobs nearly impossible.

“For the last 10 years working at WBAI has been a nightmare,” said Jose Santiago, the news director for two decades. “I compare it to the nation facing Democrats and Republicans in Washington. Their priority is to stay in power and bash each other in the head, and nothing ever gets done.”

But don't worry, Comrades, I'm sure WBAI's problems can be solved with a winter fundraising drive!

Wow. Just substitute "corporatist" and "fitchites". These people see their incompetence as a conspiracy.

"Their priority is to stay in power and bash each other in the head, and nothing ever gets done."

And I bet none of that "Inner Party" saw it coming. Now they'll be looking for a scapegoat...
