Board Meeting moved to Union Hall while KBOO interviews Union Busters

UPDATE:  According to this Audio around 01:45:50 this is a SPECIAL BOARD MEETING.  Hope they sent a notice out to membership.
UPDATED UPDATE: Actually this is no big dead according to comments:

you're getting your meeting types mixed up.
This is a special board meeting, which has a few, easy to meet notice requirements. All it really is is a meeting outside the standard time, which the board has every right to do.

A special membership meeting requires mailed notice to all the members, 5% of the membership to show up, etc, etc.
That is where you can do things like bylaw changes.
So NEVERMIND.
............

This no way has anything to do with board member Timothy Welp appointed as new employee negotiator.  Nothing at all.  Stop thinking that.  In fact, forget you just read it.

The new location for the August 6th board meeting is:

Public Notice
KBOO Board of Directors Meeting for August 2013
Tuesday, August 6th, 2013, 6pm
SEIU Local 503 Union Hall 6401 SE Foster Rd
Portland, OR
Always helpful, we'll add the phone number and website for readers.  Never know when they might come in handy:

(503) 235-5071

One bonus of the harder to access meeting is that it's harder for random KBOO members to just walk off the street and access.  Because we've learned transparency and access have only given us trouble.   If they don't have a car or don't want to bike home in late dangerous traffic, let them take the bus.  With Trimet's cuts, they'll have to leave early.

We thank our benefactor Comrade Welp for gifting us this tactic.  Welp was first mentioned in comments here:

Another thing that occurred at the board meeting which is interesting.
KBOO appointed a lead negotiator for the foundation/membership in the union negotiations with staff.

Board Member Timothy Welp was selected as the member of choice, likely due to his background in union negotiations. In his day job, Timothy serves as a union organizer at SEIU.

So a union organizer is representing the 5,500 person foundation in negotiations with the newly organized union staffers.

There were no questions about a conflict of interest.

Oh yeah, at the meeting last night Timothy said "in his professional opinion" he does not see the need for KBOO to have lawyers present during negotiations, but only have them for advice if needed.
Don't worry, this should work out fine.

That's right.  It will work out fine.  And if it doesn't, we can all say, "Oh welp."

In related news, KBOO has yet to explain  Lisa Loving's disastrous choice interviewing a UNION BUSTING non profit OSPIRG as blogged here:

The comments on KBOO's Facebook timeline are still there:

But no response from KBOO:

Dear KBOO,
I was disappointed to find out that you hosted a representative from the union-busting, non-profit OSPIRG yesterday. Community radio should support the community, not organizations that ruin workers' lives.
Neil Loehlein ps. I've had two friends fired from OSPIRG while trying to organize a union there, so this is a very important issue to me.

Hey KBOO!! OSPIRG is a union buster. They ruin lives. They have no respect for their workers. As unionized shop, why let these traitors speak on your programs? There are so many other worthy folks in Portland who could speak about medical care accessibility.
  • KBOO Community Radio Hey Chani - I'm passing your comments on to our News and Public Affairs Directors. Thanks so much for sharing your concerns. Worker solidarity is key!

Aaaand, even Lisa "Gee I hope people have forgotten that hacker thing" Loving, who can't afford more bad press, is ignoring the issue:

  • Today on Wednesday Talk Radio: Pay for delay. My guest is Jesse O'Brien from OSPIRG, talking about Big Pharma's gambit to keep less-costly generic drugs off the market to protect their profits. Are you currently taking Lipitor for diabetes, Tamoxifen for breast cancer, Sinemet CR, Provigil? We want to hear from you. Call in 503-231-8187.
Benny EL Starseed But, did Ospirg talk about the awful benefits and working conditions they provide their canvassers, effectively manipulating and exploiting young activists and busting their attempts to organize themselves?

It's as if the "Inner Party" is hoping this values discrepancy will go away.

But these are the values of transparency in action, Comrades!  There are two sets of values: one for us in the Inner Party, and one for everyone less!   We CAN cozy up to UNION BUSTING non-profits, while at the same time using a UNION organizer and UNION resources, all after slandering Fitch as pro UNION BUSTING.   Yeah!

And if anyone doesn't like it, "Oh Welp!"

Expect ballots for the upcoming elections to be in, you guessed it, Swedish!  (stop groaning)

Hypocrisy!  Moral relativism!  Solidarity!

  6. I guess I'm a masochist...I'm going over Theresa's lies:

"Submitted by Theresa Mitchell on Fri, 07/12/2013 – 4:29pm.

KBOO is suffering a cash crisis, in large part, because the 2012 Winter membership drive was cancelled by the new, brilliant and innovative management. We lost somewhere between fifty and seventy thousand dollars. However, the new management has claimed that thousands of dollars at a time will come in to replace those funds–they were to come from a huge boost in corporate underwriting. We are still waiting for these funds. Fortunately, from decades of funding community radio in the correct manner–that is, receiving funds directly from the listeners–we still have some reserves left."

The reserves are NOT from funds directly from listeners, if this indy comment is correct:

"KBOO built up significant savings when it received CPB (Corp. for Pub. Broadcasting) grant money. That money is nearly gone. There is also $200k in Board Reserves that likely will be used to cover staffing in the near term."

And then later she says it's manufactured:

"The attempt to get rid of Staff en masse by “Station Navigator” Lynn Fitch was often mentioned, and many expressed concern that the Winter Membership drive had been cancelled, with some saying the cancellation had been an attempt to manufacture an economic crisis. "

I know, I know, water under the bridge, but either there's a cash problem, or there isn't. Unlike the "Evil Fitch" meme, it's not something that can be spun. The numbers are there or they're not.

And this latest move with Timmy Welp to look more pro union friendly or shit is not going to change the reality of those numbers.

  7. It may not just be Lisa Loving interviewing union busters.
At the board meeting, Jeff Kipilman seemed to indicate that there are very few law firms capable of representing a membership organization in negotiations.
What if the only feasible option is Bullard Law, wouldn't that be hysterical!
But that would mean KBOO thinks it needs a lawyer, which it doesn't.

The lulz, just think of the lulz.

I was also thinking of Bullard when I heard they were having trouble finding someone.

Has Welp even been following the saveKBOO/keepkbookboo stuff? Imagine him bringing up Bullard and them having to explain why they can't go with Bullard.

    Oh. My. God. lol

I'm guessing they're regular readers. If they haven't headed that off already, they're working on it after seeing your comment. It would still be funny if that was the only option. Funnier if Bullard told them 'no'.
