KBOO.FM off-line, Glorious Leader Blogs Bravely On During Webchimpgate!

For no good reason anyone can figure, kboo.fm has been down since at least Saturday evening with this generic Drupal error message:

http://kboo.fm/

DRUPAL
Site off-line

The site is currently not available due to technical problems. Please try again later. Thank you for your understanding.

If you are the maintainer of this site, please check your database settings in the settings.php file and ensure that your hosting provider's database server is running. For more help, see the handbook, or contact your hosting provider.

24 hours later the site is not only still off-line, but won't load even a 404 message:

No explanation appears on KBOO's Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/kbooradio

And that's the way it should be!  At last!  Untroubled by the Unwashed Masses!
However, the masses will not be without an opiate!  Behold!  Glorious Leader returns to guide us in these troubled times:

Board election approaches

Here is part of an email from Board member Mark Sherman:
(from Mark Sherman, member of the Committee to Keep KBOO as KBOO & recently appointed KBOO Foundation Board member)
Greeting KBOO friends,
It has been too long since I have sent out an email. Sorry. I would like to review some of the issues raised at Tabor Space and comment on where KBOO is today. Significant progress has been made in the last 3 months. The highlights include:
  1. The board has formed a negotiating team to work collaboratively and in good faith with the staff to address their concerns in the context of union negotiations.
  2. Remember the top down, corporate styled, board policy manual? It is now being modified by a new work group. The board has suspended the board policy manual until the update effort is completed.
  3. KBOO members can now contact the board directly through the board web page. This was one of my biggest concerns. The board should be responsive and accessible to its members.
  4. Members can now join the governance committee. This is not a big gain. However, the development committee, which has been dormant for too long shall begin meeting again beginning Monday, Aug 5 at 6:00 at KBOO. This will prove to be a critically important committee in the near future.  We need your ideas.
  5. I don’t think you have to worry about KBOO making significant changes to programming without input from the membership. Consider joining the programming committee.
Most of our initial concerns have been or are being addressed. You are the reason for this success. Your attendance at board meetings, your participation in committees, your organizing efforts, your lobbying the board, and your continued support of KBOO made these changes possible.
The next KBOO election is critical. Please ensure your membership is up to date and you are eligible to vote. If your membership has recently lapsed, when you renew, be sure to pick up a ballot at KBOO. Thanks for being KBOO members! KBOO belongs to all of us.

Cadre should test their loyalty by keeping a straight face when reading this line:

"KBOO members can now contact the board directly through the board web page."

If you're lips twitch, keep practicing or the Coo Bay Gulag may be your summer vacation destination!

One benefit of the webchimpgate is few members will know of, or even how to get to, the next board meeting:http://savekboofromsavekboo.blogspot.com/2013/07/board-meeting-moved-to-union-hall-while.html

They would have no idea, without reading this blog, it's at:

Public Notice
KBOO Board of Directors Meeting for August 2013
Tuesday, August 6th, 2013, 6pm
SEIU Local 503 Union Hall 6401 SE Foster Rd
Portland, OR

Thank Marx for that!  No filthy proles gumming up the works!

SOLIDARITY

-Meresa Titchell

UPDATE BY GLORIOUS LEADER: added text, probably a formatting issue:

……………………………………………………………………………………end of Mark’s email…………………………………
Keep KBOO will be issuing an endorsement statement soon.  In the meantime, here is a preview list of Keeper-endorsed candidates: Michael Wells, Adin Rogovin, Jennifer Davis, Robin Ryan and Joe Uris.

She doesn't give a link lol. Wonder if she checked and was 404'd or if she expects everyone to know where it is.

All part of the plan, Comrades! Now that we are in complete control, there is no need to let the unwashed masses know when and where board meetings will be held! Who knows, maybe we'll hold them in Astoria or Baker City!

Trusted comrades will be informed of the time and locale of the board meeting on the secret KKK mailing list - the rest of you peasants wouldn't really be interested in attending the board meeting anyway!

  3. "Significant progress has been made in the last 3 months. "

If by "progress" he means driving the station so far into the ground and legal dead ends that God him/herself is weeping, sure.

Mark, that isn't a summer breeze you're feeling. It's air rushing by as you're falling in a DEATH SPIRAL.

  4. 36 glorious hours since we shut down the KBOO web page, Comrades!

SaveKBOO is now the official method of communicating with the proletarian KBOO masses - that way, the Inner Party can completely control the message without fear of possible ideological contamination!

If the Bank of the Cascades has any problems contacting us in the future, we have instructed them to contact us through the KBOO.fm web page!

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!

  5. Well, obviously KBOO couldn't be expected to keep up its web page over the weekend, since there was Pickathon to go to and such.

However, at 9 AM begins what bourgeois businesses refer to as "business hours". Let's see how many "business hours" the site remains down, Comrades!

Remember, at KBOO, ideology trumps competence!

    2. And still no one asking questions on their Facebook page.
Weird. And think what this means for emails hosted by KBOO: they don't work. The only way people can be contacting management is by phone or personal email. Which could be happening. Just strange no one would say anything on Facebook page.

    3. We are going to keep kboo.fm locked down until after the board elections, Comrades!

Of course, I'm not sure why Glorious Leader is so concerned about the elections - after all, look at the reference to Mark Sherman: "Mark Sherman, member of the Committee to Keep KBOO as KBOO & recently appointed KBOO Foundation Board member".

When we can run dissidents off of the board (or vote them off the board), and appoint our lackeys in their place, what difference do the elections make anyway?

BTW, thanks for the free Pickathon tickets, proles!

IDK...time for a FB raid? Facebook lets you post as alternate profiles now. For ppl you know who don't want to be targets...

    5. "IDK...time for a FB raid?"

What makes you think we have the numbers for a raid?

Besides, this should be a legitimate berserk-button for programmers. Losing listeners? Losing access to archives? Just need a handful of programmers (who aren't named Ben or Ed) to ask nicely wtf is happening.

Course anyone can call the station.
      Ahem:
      Studio: (503) 231-8187 - Office: (503) 231-8032

Extra lulz if it's recorded. Try to get Ani on the phone.

    6. "Of course, I'm not sure why Glorious Leader is so concerned about the elections - "

Yeah, I wondered about that too. They have their defacto coupe, what more do they want? Maybe they're worried that Sue and Rabia have too much independent thought? And want to stack the board more, just in case?

If the Inner Party had more than a brain between them they'd be working over time right now to prove, now they have little opposition, that they're highly competent and can be trusted. It's not just good press, but gives them an excuse to blame ex members like EVIL Hadrian, for any past problems.

Instead, almost on cue, the website breaks.
Within a couple days of the next Board meeting.
After Bank of the Cascades almost cut them off.

Actually, do we know if the bank situation was resolved? For all we know they DID cut them off.

    7. Rabia and Paula's terms end in a few months (as do Lisa's and Adin's)

The current board has the numbers to remove every person elected in September. They've also shown an inclination to remove board members for little reason.

If they don't get their candidates voted in, they can just remove the ones they don't agree with and then replace them with friends of the party.

One of SKFSK's best friends has for weeks bravely been the person who has rebooted the server and tried to keep things going. I don't know if this person has now said fuck it and decided to let the KKK folks learn on the job.

For intrepid Mark Sherman, our board secretary who now should be responsible for the website, there are a zillion people who know how to make a temporary home page in html, that says oops please be patient while we fix the site. Call it index.html and ftp the damn thing to the hosting server. Gawd, it's not rocket science. Even Lisa's teenage hackers could do it as a public service.

You know, if the site isn't even returning a 404 message, or a drupal oops message, or anything at all, this makes me wonder.

Has the url been taken away for non payment? What's it called, the DNS server thingy that informs internet switches where to look? Come on you web savy cadre, what's it called the service you have to pay for that registers your url on the internet?

Or did someone fail to notify the registrar when hosting consultants were changed?

When that happens its not a 404 or blank page. The registrar redirects it to their page(hostgator, tucows, whatever) with a parked message. It'll also say something like "if you're the owner, don't forget to renew, etc".

Yeah, sure, but these aren't consultants. They're domain owners. That means they have(had) and investment in the station. That's completely different from some random guy they hired. Especially when one of those guys is Conser's buddy. (maybe he's not anymore?)

Whoever it is, KBOO is responsible. I'm still hoping it was Arther Davis who pulled the plug. Talk about karma. Heh.

    9. *facepalm*
OK, there seems to be confusion about terminology around here. These people:
      domain owner
      webmaster
      webconsultant
      sys admin

are NOT the same type of people.

They can be, an owner can be the webmaster and sysadmin, but they are not a webconsultant. A webconsultant is usually hired on a case by case basis. Their responsibilities are limited to what they were hired to do.

A domain owner, however much it may suck, owns and is responsible for the domain and whatever is hosted on it, regardless of how much funding "web stuff" gets.

The domain owners are fair game.
Web consultants are not; they're just contract employees.

      Hope that helps.

      Delete
    10. Additional: of course it is possible, even likely, that to evade responsibility, KBOO's "inner party" set up consultants and volunteers to be domain owners.

The consultants should have known better, but that goes both ways. Cuz now Arthur FUCKING Davis has one of those domains by the balls, if he wants to...

      Delete
    11. I doubt Arthur Davis owns the domain. The address listed and the organization listed are both KBOO's. He likely was the ED when the action took place initially but I'm sure KBOO owns the domain.
Head of the KBOO Corporation... S.W. Conser (aka little Stevie)

      Delete
    12. You're probably right. As far as dotFM is concerned it's the email account manager@kboo.org.

Which would mean, hold on to your hat, EVIL FITCH owns kboo.fm domain:

"please contact Lynn Fitch, 503.231.8032 x222 or manager@kboo.org"

Not joking. Unless Davis or someone transferred the email from the dotFM account, or the pw are shared by the board, that's how it works. As far as dotFM is concerned, ownership is connected to the manager@kboo.org account.

There could be co ownership or a redundancy, and if there's no conflict in the org this isn't a problem....

      You see the problem.

This will only get more entertaining.

      Delete
    13. "There could be co ownership or a redundancy, and if there's no conflict in the org this isn't a problem...."

Of course this doesn't mean KBOO can't ultimately get control back. But it will make things very difficult for a while.

Organizations less drama have lost control of domains in situations like this...

      Delete
    14. "He likely was the ED when the action took place initially but I'm sure KBOO owns the domain.
Head of the KBOO Corporation... S.W. Conser (aka little Stevie)"

This gives credence to the setting people up theory. Conser didn't want his name on stuff. Of course the "owner" of a non profit website should be the non profit corporation. But that doesn't go with the "member ownership" brainwashing that was the order of the day.

Now KBOO will have to explain to Membership and dotFM why their registry is fucked up. And if EVIL FITCH is the only one with the password....oh dear.

You know KBOO knows better because their corporate business registry is very clear that KBOO Foundation owns the account. The KBOO foundation should be on their Whois too.

"The KBOO website is down and is in the process of being restored."

      That sounds so pathetic....

    15. FYI, we're working on summarizing the website/domain issues. There's plenty of lulz to go around.

      Delete
    16. The fact that KBOO can't even post a generic "KBOO.fm is currently being repaired" message on KBOO.fm does tend to indicate that there are control issues -i.e. no one in the Inner Party has the password to the domain.

They have probably spent the day begging dotFM to give them control over the domain without the password, rather than having to go groveling to the person who actually has the password.

If only Lynn has the controlling email password, then she is bound as an employee to follow the instructions of the board who in no uncertain terms told her she could not do ANY type of work while on medical leave. So I sure hope Lynn has the balls to tell them that she's going to follow their instructions to the letter, see you in a month, then disconnect the phone.

Not if it's hosted at kboo.fm or kboo.org.

This is where rubber reality hist the road: I'm guessing somewhere in all the by-laws fine print, or even how kboo has to conduct themselves legally, they have to be timely on how the contact members, make themselves available for business, etc.

Now they have a brick/mortar office and land-line so they can conduct most traditional business. Assuming someone's answering the phones. But running a radio station with a heavy online archive? It's not just archives; people go online to check the station schedule. Listenership is about to drop like a rock if this goes on for another day.

Then it will get worse: they'll start to lose their SEO. They have a week before the damage gets bad.

      Interesting times ahead.

Bruce Hornbuckle or 3/4 time and slash the lighting bill... as long as it's an investment in the station and not a permanent cut ya know. I don't have the numbers in front of me but showing you the kind of bold willingness and dynamism necessary at the station. One well placed shot. Nothing crippling, no- But a high caliber / grain shot nonetheless. Would be good. Or do it peacemeal whatever. It's not up to 'me'.

Bruce Hornbuckle Maybe cut some staff to half time. Even temporarily.. while redirecting funds to guys like M&D who will bring a few hundred thousand listeners to the station. It would be like buying market share, and getting free training thrown in. Like a 10c Hamburger, hard to beat. Plus they're great guys so. I wouldn't say so if they wern't ya know. It's not like that. Satan could get market share, and I'm sure Kboo would be faster to put him on as a 'diverse viewpoint' good lawd you people.

Bruce Hornbuckle You could really get rid of 6/7 of your paid employees to pay for these guys, and you'd be exponentially better off. That's what I would do if it were up to me. Well Jenka just had a baby. I'm not cruel but difficult times require some tough choices. I'm sure you could put together a package for even a 'mini-series' of a show with them, if you put your minds to it. Sometimes I think you want to lose. Really.

Bruce Hornbuckle You really couldn't do better than finding some money to pay for some high quality talent to kick this station into gear. It's faltering like a van with 200,000 miles. Needs a special touch. The bleed over in quality throughout the station, If you didn't tar and feather them first would be priceless. Not to mention the industry contacts. PLEEAAZZZEE KBOO. Get with IT!
